If You Give a Kid a Pickle

This is what happens...

Caleb's Great Grandma (my Nana) had hip replacement surgery on Monday. Everything went well, but the recovery process will be painful and slow. If you remember, could you say a prayer for her and my mom who's taking care of her. My dad will be having major ear surgery on August 7, too, so my mom's stress level is pretty high these days. I'll write more about this next week.

We're off to see Caleb's Mimi and Grandpa who live in another state. We can't wait to see them! :-)

Spills of All Kinds

Caleb went for his weight check today. He's gained 10 oz. since last month, but now he's in the 5th percentile. Whatever. The child never stops moving, so I'm not surprised he's skinny! They said as long as he's gaining weight, he's fine.

He took three steps yesterday (again, someone else encouraging him to walk--my mom!), and today smacked his face into the coffee table and bled for a while. Caleb's upper lip is attached to the bottom of his upper gum (as mine was when I was little). The doctor said they wouldn't snip it unless it interfered with his teeth coming in. My doctor when I was little told my mom that I'd probably fall and break it loose once I started walking and that's exactly what happened. Caleb hasn't let me look in his mouth long enough to tell if his has broken loose, but there was quite a bit of blood coming out.


And here's Caleb taking a spill of a different kind...spilling the water out of the bottom of my plant. You can see he's very proud of himself!

This picture was taken the day Caleb started getting sick a couple of weeks ago. Looking back I should have known he was sick, but at the time I just thought he was exhausted from lack of sleep while we were out of town. Doesn't he look pitiful? :-(

Another tooth

Thanks to everyone for their comments and email about flying with a baby. I've received some great advice and am feeling much more prepared now! We leave in about two weeks, so I'll let you know how it goes. If you think of any more great advice, feel free to send it our way.

Caleb cut another tooth yesterday. It's barely peeking over the surface of the gum, but it's there. He also took a step Saturday morning when my friend, Amy, was here. She was encouraging him to walk to her. We tend not to encourage that around here :-) since we can hardly keep up with the little guy as it is! He's now really crawling--on hands and knees--which he started about a week ago. No more commando crawl for our Caleb!

Oh, and by the way, he's over his sickness. The rash didn't get very bad or last long, so we are thankful. The fever was really the worst part. Thanks for asking and praying for him!

Flying--Need Advice

We need some advice over here. Late this month we'll be flying to see hubby's family. We have never taken Caleb on a plane and don't really know what to expect. It's only a 2 1/2 hour flight, but he is SUPER active, which worries me a little (okay, a lot!).

So, have any of you ever flown with a 10-month-old and have some great ideas?

Any suggestions for keeping him happy/occupied in the airport and on the plane?

(If you don't have any suggestions, but you know someone who's flown with a baby, ask them for advice. We need some!)

Sick

Well, Caleb finally caught something from another kid. It only took 9 1/2 months, so I guess that's good, huh?

He has Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease (not to be confused with foot-mouth disease that cattle get!). He picked it up from a friend's child last Thursday, who didn't know her daughter had it until we (and lots of other kids) had been at her house. The incubation period for this illness is 3-7 days and on day 3, Caleb had a fever. It lasted about 2 1/2 days and last night I started to notice spots on his feet. This morning he has what looks like a BAD case of diaper rash (another symptom of HFM) and spots on his hands as well. The nurse at our pediatrician's office said to just watch him and the rash should go away in 3-5 days. Since it's a virus there's not much they can do.

So, we watch and wait and get little sleep at night. *sigh* Pray for Caleb. He's also cutting another tooth, poor guy. :-(
