Bumps and Blessings
My mom came to my house yesterday to pick all of us (me, baby, dogs) up and take us to her house (so blessed to have family relatively close by!). We loaded up the car and headed out. Traffic wasn't too bad, even through some construction. Then, a little over halfway in our 2 1/2 hour trip, "POP!" The tire blew out. Unbelievable! We were in the middle of nowhere...my mom, me, a 7-month-old, and two dogs stuck on the side of the road. Things I'm thankful for: 1)I was NOT by myself with baby and dogs when this happened, 2) my hubby renewed our AAA membership, and 3) it only took an hour for the guy to get there and change the tire (from 20+ miles away). You may be thinking, "why didn't you just change the tire yourself?" Well, you obviously don't know me very well if you have to ask that question. A girly-girl by no means, but not a laying on the ground on the pavement next to a fire-ant bed on a hot day in a tank top changing a blown out tire kind of girl. That's why we have AAA. But, I digress. I am also thankful that Caleb was not too fussy or tired or hungry and didn't have a dirty diaper during all of this!
To make the day a little crazier, while we were standing there on the side of the road waiting for the super-nice gentleman to change my completely shredded tire, hubby called my cell phone (in the car at the time!) to tell me he had arrived at his destination safely. I missed his call. BIG bummer.
And, now, the blessings...
GOOD NEWS: Caleb's schedule has not been adversely affected by our trip. This is the first time EVER that we have traveled that his schedule has not been totally messed up. He's sleeping well, napping well, eating well, and just having a grand 'ol time with Grandma (my mom) and Nana (my grandma, great grandma to Caleb).
A sweet friend told me on the phone Sunday afternoon not to think of this time as being away from my precious husband, but as a little getaway for myself and to enjoy being with my family (almost all of my family on my dad's side lives in the same area where my mom lives--BIG BLESSING!). So, we're on Day Two of Blessed Vacation! It's been a blessing so far to be at home during the day with Nana...so nice to have someone (adult) to talk to!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for all your prayers so far. His blessings are showering down.

Silent Night
On another note, could someone please tell my son that dropping his pacifiers behind the bed is not a cool thing to do? We put several in his bed and when I went in earlier, he had thrown them all out. And what's the fascination with the remote control? If he sees it, he wants it.

A Rough Couple of Days...

Can you SEE the crazy hair on this child? Look closely--it's going everywhere. It is representative of how the last few days around our house have been. I thought I would include a couple of pictures to go along with my Thursday Thirteen. What you can't see is MY hair, which looks far worse than his. I was able to actually take a shower yesterday, but didn't have time to dry it, so my naturally curly hair (that I wear straight) has now been slept on wet and is looking BAD.
P.S.--Happy, Smiling, Adorable Baby Boy's alter ego, Screaming Child, is gone. Hopefully for a VERY long time!

1…. Got up at 2:30am to feed a screaming child. 2…. Woke up at 4am to same screaming child. 3…. Got up at 6:30am to fix hubby breakfast. 4…. Went to get screaming child out of his bed at 6:45am. 5…. Fed above-named child. 6…. Played with above-named child. 7…. Held same child who refused to be anywhere but in my lap. ALL DAY! 8…. Read a book to child before naptime. 9…. Took a nap while child napped. (yes, we're back to sleeping when he sleeps since "when he sleeps" is rare these days.) 10…. Tried desperately to get child to entertain self after naptime. Unsuccessful. 11…. Got spit on by child. 12…. Learned that wearing a tank top around child might encourage child to want to suck on my shoulder. Result: hickey. 13…. Yawned A LOT. Gotta go...apparently we're not napping during naptime now. *sigh* Links to other Thursday Thirteens! 1. Heather 2. Faith 3. Jeana 4. wystful1 |

Boys vs. Girls

I was reading in Parents magazine yesterday about how boys and girls are different (I know, shocking!). They said most of the differences are biological, contrary to the theories that differences are based solely on socialization. We do tend to treat girls and boys differently, however, comforting little girls more when they get hurt, etc. One doctor said we tend to hug little boys less as they grown up than we do little girls. This can cause boys to act aggressively because they crave that physical touch. I thought that was interesting. It's a good thing to keep in mind, although we don't have to worry about this anytime soon, seeing as how Caleb gets LOTS of hugs and kisses every day. (I'm just waiting for the day he tells me that's gross...until then I kiss away!)
Mom and I were talking the other day and she commented that we didn't know what to think when we found out we were going to have a boy. My family only knows girls, since I just have a sister. But now we can't imagine what it would be like without our sweet Caleb. He is so much fun! We figured out what to do with a boy, I guess! :-)

1…. He is the most loving man I have ever known.
2…. He is an incredible father (I knew he would be long before we got married!).
3…. He will go to Wendy's late at night to get me a "Frosty" (thanks, honey!).
4…. He is a great listener.
5…. Other people respect him, which makes me proud.
6…. He has a way with words :-) ...sometimes things don't come out of his mouth exactly as he meant for them to, but I know him well enough to know what he really meant to say.
7…. He has a wonderful work ethic and works hard to provide for our family.
8…. He calls from work during the day to check and see how we're doing at home.
9…. He is so steady...he takes things in stride and rarely gets as frustrated as I do!
10…. He encourages me.
11…. He is incredibly intelligent.
12…. He will turn 30 2 years and 13 days before I will! :-)
13…. He desires a relationship with God above all else, and always prays that God will give us the wisdom to raise our child to be a godly man.
I love you, babe! Thanks for loving me more than I ever could have imagined possible and putting up with my quirks! It's been 5 years since you said you'd never date me (because I was about to leave the country), but I'm so glad you changed your mind. May the next 5 years together be even more blessed than these last 5 have been.

Sundays
But, when you have a small child, Sundays are HARD! Caleb's misses his morning nap, which usually makes him very cranky. We took Caleb to his Bible class for the first time yesterday. He did great. We picked him up after class to take him to service, not knowing how long he would act "appropriately" and get to stay. Not long. His Daddy did the Scripture reading and led the opening prayer, and the whole time he was up there, I was trying to cover Caleb's mouth to stop him from LOUDLY blowing spit all over me and everyone within a five foot radius. Needless to say, he didn't stay long! We sent him back to the nursery, which is also his first time for this. One of us usually takes him out to the foyer. Justin leaned over after he took Caleb to the nursery and commented on how we hadn't really sat together in church for about 7 months. Wow, enjoying a whole sermon together! Well, about 5 minutes later, we were summoned out of service to the nursery where ALL the babies had started crying and scared Caleb, who also started screaming uncontrollably. There weren't enough hands to go around and hold all the babies who were crying! Justin calmed him down and he was fine from then on. It's a lot of work to take a baby to church!
